How Wilburn YR Elementary School Get Its Name?

Wilburn Elementary School was named after Mrs. Vena Wilburn.  Mrs. Wilburn was born in Person county, NC in March of 1897. She attended Elon College and North Carolina State University.  In the 1920s, Mrs. Wilburn was principal and teacher at Wilder's Grove School until it merged with Millbrook School.  She taught fifth grade at Millbrook and then at Vena Wilburn when it opened in the early 1960s.

Mrs. Wilburn retired in 1965.  After retiring, she came back and taught one more year, totaling over 50 years of service in the Wake County Public School System.

Mrs. Wilburn died in October, 1993.  We appreciate her dedication to public education and are very proud to have our school named in her honor.
